Portland is 5.5 kilometres south of the Princes Highway. It is a town where koalas, seals and whales are all regular visitors in and around the town. A large population of koalas can often be seen in the parks and gardens and seals and large stingrays frequent the city boat ramp and fish cleaning tables particularly during school holidays and the tuna season. Southern Right Whales and Humpbacks enter the bay annually. Details of watching sites are available from the Information Centre which is in the Portland Maritime Discovery Centre on the waterfront.
