Khancoban is on Alpine Way
Khancoban is a small village, just 13 kilometres from the Victorian/New South Wales border. It was built specifically to house the workers of the Snowy Mountains Scheme, which commenced in 1949. Today it services the Snowy Mountain tourists. The township has snow chain hire, general store, service station and hotel with bottle shop. Vehicles travelling along Alpine Way will need to carry a 'Park Entry Pass', which can be purchased from the National Parks and Wildlife Information Centre in Khancoban.
The Information Centre features historic and nature displays, films about the Kosciusko National Park and the Snowy River Scheme are shown on request. The staff can advise you on road conditions, bushwalks, fishing licences, park entry passes, skiing and local facilities and attractions. Open: Every day from 9.00am – 12.30pm and 1:00pm - 4:00pm (closed for lunch from 12:30pm-1:00pm and closed Christmas Day).
