Hill End, which is approximately 65 kilometres west along a sealed road from the Castlereagh Highway, is a former gold mining town and today, gold panning is a popular tourist activity. Some of the older members of the community run gold panning tours in the same fossicking areas that yielded the gold which brought on the gold rush in the 1850's. For more details call into the Information Centre which is open daily from 9.30am - 4.30pm (closed for lunch from 12.30pm - 1.30pm). It is also closed on Christmas Day. While you are there relax with lunch in the picnic area with picnic tables, free gas/electric barbecues, flush toilets and drinking water. To reach the centre from the entrance to Hill End continue along Beyers Street to the end, turn left onto Belmore Street then right onto High Street.
