Coonabarabran is considered the "astronomy capital of Australia", and many of the businesses and government buildings in the town feature astronomically themed information plaques. Within the Coonabarabran Information Centre there is a skeleton of a giant Diprotodon, the largest marsupial ever to live. Likened to a giant wombat, these marsupials roamed the area over 30,000 years ago. The skeleton was unearthed east of Coonabarabran at Tambar Springs in 1979.
