The Kennedy Highway runs west from the Captain Cook Highway at Smithfield which is 14 kilometres north of Cairns. It scales the Kuranda Range which is a two lane highway with a number of overtaking bays and lookouts on the way up to Kuranda. The highway then continues west through Atherton to Forty Mile Scrub National Park, From there it becomes the Kennedy Developmental Road which runs south through Hughenden and on to Winton then heads west to Boulia. It is 238 kilometres from the Captain Cook Highway to Forty Mile Scrub and a 3.5 hour drive and another 942 kilometres from Forty Mile Scrub to Boulia which will take 12.5 hours.
